A MAN has died following a serious assault outside Liverpool Arms pub in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ronald Hayes, 63, from Northumberland had his ventilator switched off at 1pm on Monday in Chester County hospital.

Mr Hayes was attacked by two men both aged 26 from Ellesmere Port after they had all been inside the pub on Watergate Street.

Mr Hayes was attacked at 12.50am on Saturday. The two men have been arrested but police are urging people to come forward with information.

On Saturday morning, police erected a forensic tent outside the pub. Sergeant Andrew Burrage said that the situation is under control: “Extra patrols will be visible in the area to answer any questions. Police know that the victim and the attackers were in the Liverpool Arms prior to the attack.”

Mr Hayes’ family said that he will be missed: “He was a doting partner, father and grandfather. He had a drive for life that outweighed his years. We are all deeply saddened.”

Dan Plumb, 20, from Garden Lane walked past the Liverpool Arms at 1am returning from a night out and described the scene: “Police were there straight away and in large numbers. I knew it was serious. The window of the Liverpool Arms was smashed and there was a lot of blood all over the floor.”

A Home Office post mortem examination will take place today.

If anyone has any information, please call the police emergency number 101 quoting incident number 50.
